Tristan Prettyman: "10.19.03
surfing with the parents...
umm holy guacamole...I can't begin to tell you how great the waves have been the last 2 days...it just doesn't get much better than this...I tell ya, I know, I know I haven't really told you anything yet have I? Well this weekend, was basically summer in October....I love California, despite a light fog that rolled back and forth like incense in a still room, it was 75 degree's +, water a nice 66 degree's, not a wind in the sky and lots of water in my eye...I love the ocean! I'm getting sad thinking that I am going to have to leave it in a month or so :( Hopefully I wont miss out on too much while I'm gone...I can see it now, we'll get the swell of the year while I'm freezin my bootie off in DC...ohh well, I can't really complain being able to trade the one thing I love for the other, you cant always have your cake and eat it too!
Ohh wow so I'm still in shock and I just want to camp out on the cliff or something and wake up at dawn and surfy surfy till my arms fall off...Now that I think of it, there was something better than the waves being ridiculously good...that something was catching a wave with my Dad...he is the definition of smooth, I like watching him surf , he is soo graceful, swift and smooth, from paddle to take off, up to the nose and back, kick out...and as I paddled back out with him it was just like 'sjdhfsdhjsddssjd' being able to surf with your parents is unlike anything I have ever experienced...Surfing saved my family pretty much...
But back to my dad, he's really taught me to strive for excellence, to learn and soak up as much as I can, and to be determined to understand and be knowledgeable at whatever it is I might be doing. He has always stressed that no matter what you are doing, whether learning how to play the guitar to fixing a surfboard; if you wanna get it right, it takes time, patience and focus...and I want to thank him for that, for teaching me how to take my time, and not be in a rush, and not get caught up in the everyday bullshit, to just do what I love and love what I do...He has always been there for me, on good terms or bad, and always has believed in me...ya know, it was my parents idea to take a break from school and pursue music...shocking...I know... I guess I just feel very fortunate with the situation I have created around myself, sometimes I think...'how did I get here?' I trip out when I think it was only 2 years ago I decided to stop going to college and play music and here I am going on tour, that kind of thing just doesn't happen, not to me at least, not in this family...

The things you surround yourself with is key. From family to lovers, old friends to new friends, where you hang out and what you do with your time...for the past couple months I have been renovating my life...I think its a little strange sometimes being so young and all and feeling the need to clean out my life...but I find that many people aren't too far ahead or behind...Its just a growing thing, when you feel like you are changing or are in need of some. When you know what you want, but you are afraid to make a move, afraid you might be judged by friends who claim that who you want to be isn't the person they know. But its the person you want to know, and its in your heart and sometimes you just know what the right answer is, its just whether or not you listen or not. And its when we step out of our element and make moves towards the person we see ourselves as, that we get closer to becoming who we really are. It takes a lot of admitting, and recognizing, and list making, and thinking, and sorting and crying, and laughter..it takes time..but in the end I think we become more happy, satisfied and content than we ever were before. Its hard breakin habits and coming to terms with things we have put so much time into avoiding...finally admitting that you've known all along why every relationship failed, finally being proud of who you are and not feeling ashamed for being excited about your life...life is but a box of chocolates...you never know what you are gonna get, or what kind of journal entry you are gonna get for that matter right?

This is all reminded me of an e-mail that was sent to me, written by George Carlin. Now, normally I would cast a hex on anyone forwarding me /chain letters but this one really stuck with me and I think everyone should get a chance to read it, here it is:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have:

Taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints.
We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less.
We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time.
We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.
We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life.
We've added years to life not life to years.
We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor.
We conquered outer space but not inner space.
We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice.
We write more, but learn less.
We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait.
We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes.
These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do
everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill.
It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom.
A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit
delete.

Remember, spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.
Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.
Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it
doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it.
A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.
Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.
Give time to love, give time to speak, and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Ain't that the truth...One more thing before I go, thanks to everyone who came out and packed Twiggs on Friday night, I've been in the habit of closing my eyes as a way to place myself back into the song..and when I finally remember to open my eyes, its like BOO! and your all right there...and it made me soo happy to look out into the audience and see all your faces :) Thank you so much for coming out, I know for some of you that was like the 3rd show in a row you had come to, i just dont know what to say but thank you :) Big Hugs to everybody across the world :)

Nighty night,
Tris"

...a journal entry from an artist who's opening for jason mraz later on this month. i'm really thinkin i'm gonna go see him @ the norva on the 26th. the show on the 25th @ the 930 club in dc is sold out already, but the norva isn't. i really would love for you to come, but i know, if you're in boston or at home, you probably won't be able to.

be happy, love. enjoy life. enjoy those around you. enjoy growing. embrace becoming she whom you are going to be. there's always a bright side, if you're willing to see it. have a wonderful day. sleep well. take some time to relax. not only appreciate, but also marvel at the surrealism that is us. you and me. forever.

just love.
